Dear Beyond Boundaries Conference registrants,
The Beyond Boundaries Planning Committee is sorry to inform you that UND has made a decision to cancel the 7th Annual Beyond Boundaries Conference. Conferences across the country are being impacted by the realities of limited budgets and increasing travel costs, as was the case here. The decision was made to pause, step back and re-evaluate the conference and its focus.
Gerry Hanley, one of our keynote speakers, is still scheduled to present his address on Thursday, October 2, at 9:00 am. His speech "Putting Educational Innovations Into Practice with MERLOT (without going crazy)" will introduce you to an organization which has over 20,000 learning objects available for you to use in your courses. This event is open to the public and we invite everyone to attend, at no charge. Gerry Hanley’s address will be recorded and posted on the Beyond Boundaries website for viewing, if you are unable to attend.
Following his address there will be a question and answer session from 10:30 until Noon. The discussion will focus on how your institution can use MERLOT to advance the use of technology in online teaching and learning.
We are contacting all presenters and asking them to submit their presentations for us to post online. We plan to have those available for everyone to view after October 2, 2008.
All registration fees submitted for the conference will be refunded.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our returning and new Beyond Boundaries participants and presenters for your support of the conference. We will miss the networking, discussions, idea-sharing and all we learn from each of you. is the Executive Director of MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching at www.merlot.org) and Senior Director for Academic Technology Services for the California State University, Office of the Chancellor. At MERLOT, he directs the development and sustainability of MERLOT’s innovative services and consortium of higher education systems and institutions, professional societies, corporations, and other digital libraries. At the CSU, Gerry oversees the development and implementation of systemwide academic technology initiatives and integrated electronic library resources supporting CSU’s 23 campuses. Previously held positions in the CSU include Professor of Psychology, Director of Faculty Development and Director of Strategic Planning.
is currently serving as the Chair of the Department of Social Work at the University of North Dakota. As Chair, she administers graduate and undergraduate degree granting distance education programs. Professor Heitkamp has been involved in distance education work for over 20 years and has experienced the advantages, pitfalls and risks when moving curriculum outside the boundaries of an on-campus learning environment. Her pioneer efforts in coordinating a distance program from 1989 to 1992 assisted the University of North Dakota/Department of Social Work in offering the first distance social work degree in the United States from an accreditated social work program. The program was offered over the North Dakota Interactive Video Network. Her work with distance education programs has provided a variety of memorable experiences, including spending time on icy roads reaching out to students, who resided several miles from campus, to working with the social work accreditation agency to create legitimacy for distance degrees. This work resulted in numerous publications addressing the many lessons learned and numerous national and international presentations. Her research focus is engaged in thoughtful design, delivery and evaluation of distance education programs to assure quality.
Professor Heitkamp’s areas of teaching interest are social policy, administrative practice and community practice. She volunteers her service as a board member for a variety of non-profit human service organizations across the State of North Dakota. A recent focus of her volunteer work has involved examining the need for quality social work supervision and exploring ways to look at technology to assist in delivering quality supervision to social workers in remote rural areas. She is licensed as an Independent Clinical Social Worker in the state of North Dakota. In her leisure time, she enjoys time with her family (husband and two sons) and gardening. She is the second oldest child of seven children and was reared in a small town where her immediate family was one-tenth of the town’s population.
